Healing my inner child. This book made me cry so much. A coworker read it for a Kindergarten class and told me it was beautiful, and she wasn’t kidding. I’m such a pink girly, so that won me over so fast. But the art was just soooooooo beautiful. And the message even more. You can do everything right at home to raise a strong girl, but the world will do everything to tear her apart. Just like the protagonist of this book, and all we can do is have the tools to build ourselves back up again. As a little girl that was also big, who is now a woman that is still big, this is such a needed message. My past self who went through this that had to find the tools to love herself again felt so seen in this book. So thank you, Vashti, for this beautiful book.
This book won this year’s Caldecott, which is an award for “the most distinguished American picture book for children.” And it so deserves it. I am so glad we have a copy of this book at the library I work at and that kids will have this message to them.
— much love, anto
